About the Chauá society
The Chauá society is a nongovernmental organization which focuses on the conservation of the araucaria forest in Paraná state, Brazil. A major part of its work consists of establishing and implementing management plans for protected areas. This includes the accomplishment of research projects in conservation, as well as raising awareness and participation in the local community.
The society had an informal beginning in 1998, as a concept created by a group of forestry engineering students. It was officially founded in 2003 and currently consists of 17 collaborators, of which most of them work on a voluntary basis. The name “Chauá” refers to a parrot (Amazona brasiliensis) native to southeastern Brazil.
